These are working a treat. I was worried because all my planter boxes are in the shade, but a friend told me to plant leafy greens, as they don't mind the shade. (On a separate tack this friend has an etsy shop you should all check out) Anyway, the greens are doing wonderfully.

And the mint is coming back with a vengeance!

Congratulations, Pop!

Pop restarted the chorus program for the middle and high schools in La Conner this year. Last Monday they had their debut choral performance. The theater was packed, something not often seen for theatric endeavors in La Conner, and the audience was lapping it up. The kids sounded sooo good; I was bursting with pride. Afterwards I had to go home and get to bed for yet another early opening at the bakery, Gurrr!

But the following day the four of us celebrated in style. Champagne, sunshine and having three of my favorite people all to myself was almost worth missing the after party for.

shakedown cruise

Pop and I planned a shakedown cruise on Saturday. But Saturday turned out to be all shakedown and no cruise as we went back and forth to the boat store. Luckily for us the weather has done nothing but improve and yesterday we got onto the water for the loveliest afternoon.

Delayed gratification.

I saw these in a thrift store a few days ago, but didn't buy them. Who needs old Grecian urn style drinking glasses? I proceeded to think about them longingly for two days, then go back for them. The delayed gratification was loads of fun.

lies

Sometimes I have an hour to kill waiting for the bus. Then I only engage in wholesome, free activities like going to the library or taking long walks. I never, ever drink wine in a dark bar while knitting and watching the rain fall.

I also never shop.

Lugandi!

A friend at work gave me some hand me down earrings. What a girly treasure trove! New to the word lugandi? I've defined it here. I'm still guessing at the spelling - corrections or affirmations from Dad or Uncle Sandy would be appreciated.

Cooking fail

I tried this is a few nights ago. Admittedly, chocolate wine sounds horrible, but it was delicious. Delicious. I left determined to go home and make myself a batch. The only recipe I could find was this one. I didn't read the reviews until after I had made up a batch so totally disgusting that it deserved the name chocolate wine. I added heaps of sugar, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, nothing helped. What an epic cooking fail.

BBQ

Occasional sunny days lately have left me hankering for hot dogs. Sunday evening I got my chance. We built up a fire in our pit, and cooked dogs with lots of mustard, ketchup and sauerkraut. Yummy-licious. It was almost warm enough that I wanted sandals, almost. The tray as I trooped outside:

Happy birthday, Nan!

It was lots of fun to have an evening out. Thanks for done gettin' born, Hannah. Love you!

Rhubarb abounds

It was funny to go to the Hedlin's farm stand yesterday. I'm accustomed to that place overflowing with fruit, berries and veggies, but it was just rhubarb and leeks. I took home rhubarb and made compote. (Which I managed to over sugar and then had to add lemon to - oh the cruel irony). It is nice to be cooking with Skagit fresh food, though.

Mixology

You too can make my new cocktail. I know you're all bursting with excitement. It's called Peppy because that's what Linton said when he tried it. These are the approximate proportions I used to make two.

Two heaping table spoons of honeydew melon, muddled
Juice from 1 squeezed lime
4 oz tonic
4 oz gin
simple syrup to taste (I used honey rather than sugar to make mine)
I didn't mix with ice because it was warm enough to enjoy a cool cocktail, but only just.

Easter post

Easter came and went, and this blog didn't seem to notice. Cheep, cheep!! It was a good easter spent in Seattle with the family. Although this picture of my impulse purchase was the only one I snapped that day.
