The three of us got out for a bit today. The Mount Baker, Snoqualmie National Forest is practically in our back yard. It was a nice little hike. Friendly jogger offered to take our picture.
And when we stopped for lunch Henry was wiped out.
On our way back we splash around in the Nooksack river and admired all the Cairns.
You'll remember when Henry learned to swim, well today he took another brave step and actually dunked his head under the water to go fishing for sticks. I don't have any pics, but oh my goodness it was cute.

necklace holder
Before I have always come up with inelegant and quick ways of holding my necklaces: strung on yarn or with a multitude of tacks in the wall. But I'm still unemployed (yup didn't get the job offer in interview one), so with my free time and the Restore in my neighborhood I decided to go all out.
The shelf was a totally finished little piece of bamboo (restore $3), and I got some nice looking shelving brackets here. Then I just tapped in a bunch of pretty brass nails. I'll admit to spending a little while just gazing at this over the weekend.

Interview
Chalkboard
I approached my landlady, and before the entire request was out of my mouth, "Can I paint a chalkboard onto the kitchen wall?" She was enthusing, "Go for it! That sounds great!" What a sweetheart.
Good thing Linton came home with a level the other day, or this wouldn't have been square.
We have a chalkboard in the kitchen, yay! This is something I've wanted since I first stepped foot in Colin and Mary's kitchen in the summer of 2005.

from spice jar to bud vase
I was inspired by a very similar crochet pattern I saw online yesterday (and now can't find to link to - Doh!). Their pattern was for baby food jars, and I needed something longer and leaner for my spice jar. Also, I can't crochet, so made it into a knit project. Here is the pattern:
worsted weight yarn
4.25 dpns
co 6 sts
divide sts evenly over 3 needles
join the yarn
*K1, M1, K1 repeat from * to end of row (9sts)
*K1, M1 to last st on needle, K1 repeat from * to end of row (15sts)
repeat the previous row (27sts)
K 3 rounds even
Begin ribbing: *K1,P1 to the last st on the needle, K1 repeat from * to end of row
continue ribbing until the holder is the length you want it.
BO to the last three sts
With these three sts make an i cord twice the length you want your handle.
As you bind off these three sts pick up and knit them together with the three sts opposite the i cord's beginning.

Planter boxes, erm, drawers
I went to the Re Store here in Bellingham today. Wow, that place is heaven. I wasn't planning on buying, but found these two mismatched drawers ($2 each, how could I not??) and decided I had to make planter boxes out of them.
I made sure there was plenty of drainage. (Ya, those holes are bigger than they look.)
This one has spicy salad mix, maybe my favorite thing to grow.
The small brown one has zucchini seeds, and the pails have Walla Walla onion starts.
Yum, yum, yum. I'm so excited to the real joy of gardening: eating!

women in sports
It was a sporty Saturday. First a game of Rugby with Ria: Wazzu versus Western. Ria is a WSU women's rugby alum, so needless to say we did a lot of hollering for the Cougs...and they won!
Then, although I only have bury pictures to prove it, the season opener for the Bellingham Roller Betties with pals Mariah and Chris. The poor Roller Betties are in a new venue and the spectators were crammed in there like sardines. Oh well, anything for the love of derby, eh?

Dr. Sketchy's
Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School Figure Drawing Spectacular was, well, spectacular. Hosted by a local night spot, The Temple Bar, we sat, drank and drew all with a Twin Peaks theme.
I drew:
But it was this sketch from Linton that won a prize gift certificate. Oooh, ahhh. Can you see the 2000 AD influence?
So much fun, we may just have to go back again next month.
